Default Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Tuesday, 5/13/08

Starting Thursday (May 1), we will start a new May Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $250 account at BetJamaica, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 BetJamaica account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

*IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at BetJamaica prior to making picks Sign up here

Before participating, players must PM their BetJamaica account ID to SBRforum Staff

1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.

6. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
• One entry per home and computer.
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
• Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
• Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-lealers lose.
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

Last day to enter contest and be eligible for prizes is May 12.

Big props to bbyhill, shantystar and Wrigley for all being at 70% or better to this point, which is obviuously extremely difficult to do in an UNDERDOG contest!

Orioles +148

Guthrie is the Orioles ace. Orioles are 10-5 in their last 15 home games. +148 is great value for a home ace.

Florida

Hendrikson has pitched well, so has Volquez, but I'm hoping it's decided by the bullpens. The Reds are also 4-8 versus lefties.

951 Atlanta Braves

Even though Atlanta played a doubleheader yesterday and haven't had much success on the road early in the season, they didn't use much of their better bullpen pieces and they are still the better hitting lineup here. Phillies hitting are slightly overrated for playing half of their games at their ridiculous home park and Kyle Kendrick is a retty weak pitcher. He doesn't walk much batters but his hits allowed numbers are pretty high which might be costly against power bats of Atlanta. Jo Jo Reys has only pitched a little this season, but overall looked decent. I Think the odds should be close to even here and there's probably decent value with the Braves.

MARLINS +150: Yes, Volquez is 5-1 with a 1.06 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP overall, and he has yet to allow more than two runs in a game. However, while he did toss seven scoreless innings at the Chicago Cubs in his last start with 10 strikeouts, he did also walk six batters, resulting in a season high 118 pitches thrown. Thus, it would not be inconceivable for Volquez to be slightly off of his game tonight, and given the struggles of the Cincinnati offense this season (last night notwithstanding), and less than perfect outing may not result in a Reds win. This is because Florida starter Mark Hendrickson is also off to a fine start at 5-1 with a 3.56 ERA, and his fine WHIP of 1.25 is on par with Volquez. Hendrickson has now gone seven consecutive starts without allowing more than three earned runs, and even if he is in need of support, the Marlins are currently tied for third in the Major Leagues with a bullpen ERA of 3.18, making them a Bullpen System play in this spot.

974 Texas Rangers +112

The Mariners are in a major skid right now and they just cannot seem to be able to turn the corner. Seattle has dropped 11 of its last 13 games and 15 of its last 19 as both the offense and the pitching is causing the problems. The bats have mustered two runs or fewer in eight of the last 12 games and the Mariners have averaged a mere 3.5 rpg over their last 23 games. The pitching has not been quite as bad but it has allowed five runs or more in seven of the last 13 games. So...go for Texas Rangers!

Nationals are a streaky team, they just won and I expect they'll string together another win or two. Lannan is worth it at this price since Washington allowed only 3 runs vs NY his other start against them.

Tigers have to win early if they want win Central AL.

Nate Robertson if he can repeat the last five innings of his victory over the Yankees from May 1, he'd be pretty happy, considering he gave up a three-run home run to Bobby Abreu three batters into his outing that night.

Rangers +112

The Rangers are in much better spirits than the Mariners right now. Gabbard has been throwing well, and he has been very consistent. Hernandez has some serious stuff of course, but has been struggling with his control and has been giving up runs. Gabbard was ahead of the Mariners 4-0 when the brawl started in the fourth inning in a game between these teams in Seattle last week. I like Gabbard's chances to get the W in this one, at home, without having to scuff up his knuckles.
