Default Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Friday, 5/9/08

Starting Thursday (May 1), we will start a new May Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $250 account at BetJamaica, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 BetJamaica account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

*IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at BetJamaica prior to making picks Sign up here

Before participating, players must PM their BetJamaica account ID to SBRforum Staff

1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.

6. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
• One entry per home and computer.
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
• Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
• Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-lealers lose.
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

Last day to enter contest and be eligible for prizes is May 12.

Jays +121

Roy Halliday has been very good this year. With some run support, he would have at least six wins. Sabathia, coming off a loss to KC, has struggled, although he has pitched better lately. It may come down to bullpens and the Jays have a better one.

LAA +130 (if this is one of the plays available)

Garland is 5-1 when starting against TB with an ERA of 3.43.

ORIOLES +145: Meche may be Kansas City's ace, but he has not pitched like it, especially at home where he is 0-3 with a 9.00 ERA and a 1.81 WHIP! Trachsel had success vs. the Royals last year, allowing just two runs and eight hits in 16 innings over two starts. If that isn't enough to back this nice dog, consider that the O's are an amazing 40-12 in the last 52 head-to-head meetings and that they are a Bullpen System play.

965 Houston Astros +175

Mainly just taking the biggest + odds on todays card. The Dodgers have been surging lately, hitting really well and Lowe is a very good home pitcher. They do have an excellent bullpen well. Moehler is not that bad, Houston pen is good and they have some good sticks in the lineup as well. Altough, it's still a bit of a longshot, but odds around +180 is slightly too high IMO. If Lowe isn't his sharpest, the Astros should have a shot.

Pelfrey has given up at least 4 ER in his last 3 starts. I think the Reds offense puts some runs up on the board and wins this game.

Blue Jays +113
Two teams struggling to score runs. I've got to go with the Jays with Halladay on the mound. Halladay has been excellent, and is known for going deep into games (30 complete games since 2003; 4 already this season). It's going to be tough for the tribe to score off him, especially the way they are hitting (averaging 2.8 runs over their last 10 games). I think the Jays have a far better chance in this one.

Garland has been better recently and is much better than his ERA. While Shields is a good pitcher, how often do you get +150 angels?

#961 Col +132 : the Rockies O at least has generated some runs recently, they might not be winning but they at least put up runs, the same can't be said for the Pads. add in that Cook has had success against the Pads and Peavy has been shaky against them.

LA Angels +150 seems too good to be true and probably is. Shields is a very good pitcher but he seems to start cooling down when it's heating up in mid-May. Over the past three years, opponents BAA has jumped from .194 in April to .250 in May to .275 in June to .321 in July. I'll take my chances that the Angels can chase him before the 7th.

Baltimore +145: I'd consider them at +120 or better against the shaky Royals. +145 is borderline insane value and too good to pass up. I expect a repeat of last night's Orioles' win.

BALT + 145
Looking at 3 dogs today, Balt, LAA & Toronto. I have the figures hany for this one , so this one it is. BALT is an amazing 40 -12 the last 52 games in this series, including the last 10 straight. Meche is 0-3 @ home the last 3 starts with an ERA of 9.00. A negative: Trachsel is 1-3 on the road as a dog.

I think this is a pretty good line with John Garland pitching and about as good as you get with the angels.

Shields has amazing numbers against the Angels. Although, Garland's numbers against the Rays are nearly as impressive. Shields is coming off of a shelling at Boston, however, and Garrett Anderson is beginning to put some wood on the ball. Hard to believe the Rays are commanding such a high price in this one.

967 New York Yankees +122

The Yankees avoided the sweep on Thursday against the Indians which will provide some much needed momentum heading into this revenge series with the Tigers. Detroit went to Yankee Stadium at the start of last week and took all three games making it five straight wins over the Yankees dating back to last season. New York is 9-9 on the road this season but is 7-5 in its last 12 away from home. Pitching has picked up some of the slack as the unit has allowed three runs or fewer in five of the last six games.
