Default Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Monday, 5/5/08

Starting Thursday (May 1), we will start a new May Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $250 account at BetJamaica, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 BetJamaica account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

*IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at BetJamaica prior to making picks Sign up here

Before participating, players must PM their BetJamaica account ID to SBRforum Staff

1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.

6. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
• One entry per home and computer.
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
• Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
• Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-lealers lose.
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

Last day to enter contest and be eligible for prizes is May 12.

967 Rangers

Both pitchers have had few bad outings lately, but Milwood has a very tough home park in Ranger Stadum and he has been very solid overall for the first month of the season. He seems to be back in good shape after an off-season last year following an injury. Safeco is a spacious park which should benefit Milwood as well. Seattle is a lineup simply made to hit Left-handed pitching much better as it's evident with their splits and numbers against Right-handed pitching. That's a good thing for us backing Righty Milwood. Texas is decent against Leftys and they also have slightly better batting lineup. I think there's some value on the visitors here.

Pineiro with 1.77 era in last three starts. Cards 6-5 on road while Col is 5-8 at home. Wrong team favored here IMO.

Mets are 6-4 when Perez starts against LAD, with 3.53 era, so lets give them a shot.

Piniero has been rock solid in his last three starts. 14 IP, 1 ER and two wins for STL. In 4 starts, he's only had one poor one, his season debut vs. SF. He lost another to the Giants due to poor run support, a 3-0 loss. Jimenez for COL has been sketchy at best and the Rockies have lost 5 of his 6 starts. He's struggling to get to 5-6 IP per start, which means the shaky COL bullpen could come into play.

St Louis Cardinals +114

Gotta go with the Cards here, Pineiro(2-2 3.75 ERA) has pitched well this year and Jimenez has struggled. He may get bounced from the Rockies' rotation. The Rockies(12-19) are in a funk this season and the Cards(20-12) are a first place team. I agree with HedgeHog, the line is wrong.

Arizona is starting Max Scherzer it is his 1st major league start. Most guys there 1st ever major league start are nervous and come out a little flat. You can't do that against the phillies.

ST LOUIS (+120 current)
Seems like the wrong team is favored here. Cards off to a great start while Colo is out of the gate very slowly. We are also getting a very decent pitcher in Piniero vs a very mediocre Jiminez. The only negative I can see is that Piniero got shelled vs Colo last year in his only start against them.

955 Philadelphia Phillies +135

The Phillies hit the road after winning both of their series at home the past week. They took two of three in each set and the come from behind win on Sunday will definitely provide some momentum heading into Arizona. Philadelphia has now won 10 of its last 14 games to move into first place in the National League East. The offense continues to be up and down but the pitching remains a constant positive. The Phillies have won nine of the last 13 meetings in Arizona.

St louis:

Jimenez has been inconsistent this year, giving up a lot of hits and walks. Pinero has been solid recently, and is getting a lot of ground balls. St Louis hitters have been hot, and hit right-handers well. St Louis pen is solid.

#964 KC +117 : i got a better price than this, anyway i like that KC in L7 have avg. .266 Slg. .402 vs. LAA L7 avg. .244 slg. .333, maybe i'll get lucky and LAA will let O'Day come in relief and as long as KC keeps Nunez in the pen i might be all right.

Perez has been very erratic this year either giving up 0 runs or getting shelled. Dodgers bats I think will cool off now that their winning streak is over so I think we see the good Perez tonight. Also Billingsly has been terrible all year.

PHILLIES +135: This one does not need too much anlysis. This is simply too big a price for a pitcher making his first Major League start. Both bellpens are in the top 10, so with the Phillies having the more proven starter (even if Moyer is 73) and the bullpens being close, I'll go for the value play.

Jamie Moyer is a consistent pitcher, while Scherzer is a call up from the minors. While Scherzer's minor league ERA is good, but his ERA after he falls behind in counts is a 9.

balt +122.

the os bats looked alive yesterday and only their own poor base running kept them out of the win column. olson takes the mound tonight after an impressive season debut and i feel that hes a decent bet to keep the Oak bats silent. The os also have a number of talented arms in the pen, though they're a bit of a wildcard.
