Default Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Saturday, 5/3/08

Starting Thursday (May 1), we will start a new May Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $250 account at BetJamaica, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 BetJamaica account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

*IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at BetJamaica prior to making picks Sign up here

Before participating, players must PM their BetJamaica account ID to SBRforum Staff

1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.

6. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
• One entry per home and computer.
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
• Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
• Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-lealers lose.
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

Last day to enter contest and be eligible for prizes is May 12.

Florida Marlins +142

Peavy not experiencing the greatest run support, Nolasco had very nice outing last time out vs Brewers. FLA finer pen. Youthful Marlins look to play aggressively . . .

Arizonas Webb is 6-0 with a great era, but today the Mets bats take him down early in the game.

Twins (+115 now) Detroit while playing well is still over valued here. Home dogs in MLB are always great bets. Minnesota falls into a few home dog systems I have so go with them again.

Don't think Nolasco is that bad, plus SDN bullpen is one of the worst.

Cincinnati

Reyes is 0-1 when starting against Cincy with an ERA of 9.00 and a WHIP of 2.000.

973 Tampa Rays

Tampa is improved this season with very decent batting lineup and looks like the bullpen woes that marked them in the past has also been somewhat solved. Boston is strong at home of course, and Beckett is a very good pitcher, but James Shields is good enough to compete with anyone and keep down any lineup in the league on a good day. Some value on Rays as a dog here.

Marlins +140

San Diego is 4-9 playing teams with a winning record and 5-10 on the road. Florida's Nolasco won his last won and may be a better pitcher than his 1-2 record.

SF (+149) or w/e the line is.

Myers has been struggling all year for the most part. His fastball isn't as lively as seasons passed. Cain is capable of shutting down phi

CINCINNATI REDS +126: The Atlanta Braves shut out the Cincinnati Reds 2-0 last night as Tim Hudson outdueled Edinson Volquez, but we don’t expect similar performances from tonight’s starters. If the starters do not stick around long tonight, we feel that the pitching edge would shift to Cincinnati at this nice price, as the Reds qualify as one of our Bullpen System plays here. Cincinnati ranks eighth in the Major Leagues in bullpen ERA at 3.27, while the Atlanta pen is languishing at 4.14. This is not to say that Reds starter Matt Belisle is not capable of a good effort, as he is erratic and could turn in a fine performance at any time. He has been terrible in two starts so far though. Jo-Jo Reyes is making his seasonal debut for the Braves, and he too was erratic for Atlanta last season. He did not pitch well in his two outings against the Reds however, as he was roughed up for nine earned runs while allowing 18 baserunners in just nine total innings, averaging less than five innings per start. Thus, the shaky Atlanta bullpen may be called on early here.

SF +

I think I am getting the better starting pitcher at a nice price. Myers has given up quite a few home runs this year and struggled his first couple of starts. Myers has had 2 pretty good outings recently but he is by no means dominant imo.

I like the Twins at home. Morneau and Mauer both have hit Verlander well career and Baker is good enough to get it done for the Twins today.

I am going to go with the better starting pitcher here. Cain is a very good pitcher who deserves many more wins than he gets. I am not a fan of Myers so I think the Giants get Cain some runs for a change and he gets a win.

Tampa Bay

Good pitching matchup, Shields has been very good recently, and Bo Sox hitters are slumping. Beckett has been solid, but the Red Sox pen might be the factor in this one.

Hochevar's last start really wasn't that bad.
And Sabathia's current record of 1-4 shows that he's definietly hittable.

BAL +113
Orioles beat the Angels in the series opener and send perhaps their most consistent starter to the hill today in Daniel Cabrera. Cabrera has surrendered two ER or less in his last four starts and the O's are 5-0-1 in his starts this season. Jon Garland is fresh of being spanked by the A's in his last start and he's given up 16 ER in 3 home starts with two resulting in big losses for the Angels.

NYM +160

Webb is very overrated right now. Sure he is 6-0 with a 1.98 ERA. But look at the teams he has faced: SD,SF,Col, Cin.

I think the streaking Webb will get taken down by Pelfrey, who is inconsistent at times, but how often do you get a team like the Mets at +160?

KC +205. CC is certainly the better pitcher at this stage, but thats too much value to give a decent kc lineup.

Going with the Marlins +138. SD hasn't been providing Peavy any run support and no reason to think that will change today. Like the Marlins young lineup to step up to the challenge against one of the league's toughest pitchers.
