This is bullsh*t! It should have been Mariano Rivera, a guy who was there for his team during the regular season AND in October. If Chris Carpenter doesn't win the NL Cy Young, I'll really be pissed.

Very much agreed that it should have went to Rivera, 2nd place should have been Santana and then Colon. Santana can't help that he couldn't get any run support.

He was nowhere near the best pitcher in the league, but he had the run support giving him a nice-looking win column. In a league where no starting pitcher shone especially brightly, Rivera deserved to win it.

The NL is announced in a few days - if there's any justice then it will be Clemens. But wins will win the day making it pretty much a Carpenter cert. He might not have had the wins but certainly the Astros wouldn't have made it to the play-offs without Clemens; the Cards would have still won the league without Carpenter.

But, playing devil's advocate, you want Carpenter to win the NL award and he's probably going to get it purely on the numbers in the win/loss columns. Clemens has an unbelievable ERA but has not been helped by the fact that the Astros were shutout in 7 games that he started. If you're going to give an award for pitching then give it to the best pitcher and disregard the teams overall performance.

Actually, looking again at the numbers, Willis will probably win the award. He's got 22 wins and an ERA of 2.63. Both of these numbers are better than Carpenter. Carpenter, however, was in the top 3 in the league for strikeouts though and his team made it to the NLCS. I think the D-Train will get it, but I do think Carpenter deserves it.

I like Clemens, but they can't give him the award based on ERA alone. If he was on the Cardinals, he probably could have won 25-27 games, but when giving these awards, you can't vote on shoulda, woulda, coulda.
