No way Chase Utley is worth that price
Did you guys happen to catch what Chase Utley signed for today with the Phillies. I'm sorry but that GM should be fired for giving Utley 7 years 85 million dollars.
I don't care what type of hitting streak he had last year, he's just not even close to be worth that ridiculous amount of money.
Can somebody here try and justify this outrageous contract signing???

All of these offseason contracts have been rediculous, so this this one doesn't really surprise me.

Compared to other contracts like Lilly's and Marquis', I think 85 million is a bargin for Chase.

I can see your point owned. However, would you pay him that much?

If they would not have given him the contract some other club would have.

Yes, he was obviously worth that much to the Phillies. It's the first thing you're taught in economic theory: A fair price is the one the buyer and seller agree on.
Everyone gasped when Houston gave Nolan Ryan the first $1,000,000 per year contract back in the Winter of '79. He was worth every penny of that to then-owner John McMullen.

no baseball contract is worth it, but they locked him up before he would be eligible for even bigger money. also, they still have a bargain with Howard, making like $300,000. next year they'll lock him up and have a great right side of the infield. utley hit over 300, 20 hr, 100 rbi, 100 runs, best second baseman in baseball

Do you still think it is outrageous Dan? After seeing what Chase did in 07, and the first two months of this year. Usually players fall off after signing a big contract.
I think he is worth the money.

It is, but only if isn't too long term. The Arod contract is worth it because it's arod, the best player in the game and future hall of famer. Utley is one of those guys you want to trade when he is a little older and his stock is high so you can get some awesome young prospects.
