In order to compare hitters from different eras, I think it's important to consider how dominant they are/were. When I do that, I come up with Babe Ruth as the best hitter ever.

I don't have the exact numbers in front of me but he had years where he hit 58 homers and the next highest number in the league was 17 (or something like that). I believe one year he hit more home runs single-handedly than every other team in baseball.

Manny is an amazing hitter but he is not that dominant over his era IMO.

i don't consider anyone from this era the best hitter because, of the roids factor.

You must be drinking heavily. Not even in the conversation with the top 5.

I agree with homedog. A great hitter for sure but a much better question would be is he in the top twenty. Even then the answers should be about split.

Ruth, Williams, Cobb, Mantle, Mays, Musial, Aaron, Bonds, Greenberg, Foxx, ... I can keep going till about twenty or so and although not with the career numbers yet, Pujols will surely be better barring injury. With that said, still love Manny.

Manny. although a good hitter (maybe in the top 100), is the "greatest" LOAFER of all time ... He'll be gone in the off season ... And I'm from Mass. ... The Fox

Manny is a "loafer" but he apparently does try hard according to his teammates. However, he doesn't get into the conversation at all, IMHO. No one can every win this argument, especially with the hitters of the Dead Ball Era vs. everyone who came after.

My vote? Ted Williams. Period. Imagine what he would have done had he not served in WWII and Korea! His stats would have been even more off the charts. Cobb would be 2nd (.367 lifetime average I think). Ruth would then have to be next. And so it goes.

How nice he "apparently" tries hard @20 mil. per ... According to the sports talk shows around here, many of his teammates are a bit annoyed at his lack of hustle ... He'll be gone to the Mets in the off season ... -250 on that ... The Fox

top 5 ever????? whole redsox team????? dude, step away from the pipe! Ortiz has better numbers than Ramirez, and Manny's .284 is only a step above Beltran's .272 (not to mention that Beltran actually runs the bases, and plays the field, but Beltran gets blamed for the Mets failure while Manny is top 5 EVER??????) that glaucoma medicine seems to be affecting your perspective

Let's see:

Joe Jackson
Ty Cobb
Joe DiMaggio
Babe Ruth
Ted Williams
Stan Musial
George Brett
Rogers Hornsby
Lou Gehrig
Pete Rose

Want me to keep going? Manny is a great run producer, but to say he's one of the greatest hitters ever is premature and foolish.

Well, Papi seems to be out-hitting him this year imo and is the mvp of the team.

In the greatest hitters argument, I would NEVER think of Manny in the same breath as the all-time greats. Unless there was a way to compare eras, then it is a moot argument.

But of course with baseball, unlike a lot of other sports, that's the best part: the arguing!

hey pal let me ask you a question, if a guy held a gun to your head and told you to pick between many and tony gwynn to get a hit or you die, you would be dead if you picked many thats all i have to say other that oh yea gwynn is a better hitter. I also dont think "run producer" was in this arguement
