I'm going to be trying out for a minor league affiliated team with the atlanta braves. I was wondering if anyone here has ever went to one so I know what to expect as far as drills and things that will go on. Again sorry for ot.

Pat,

I'll try to help...It depends on whether you're a pitcher or a position player.

First, some unsolicited advice:
1. Look like a baseball player - baseball pants/cleats/hat/glove. A bunch of people show up at these with cut-off jeans/tank tops, baseball hats turned around backwards, etc. This does not impress the scouts.

2. Have practiced your skills before hand - run the 60, field ground balls if you're an infielder/fly balls if you're an outfield, take BP with a wooden bat (it's a lot different than aluminum), throw your pens if you're a pitcher.

Positon players will:
Run the 60 yr dash - if you're not sub 7 you better be a catcher or be able to crush the ball if you're a corner infielder or corner outfielder)
Field and throw from their positon (infield/outifeld/catcher - stop watch time from glove to glove from home to second)
Take batting practice with wooden bats

Pitchers will:
get loose long tossing in the outfield and throw a brief bull pen with the radar gun on them

The pitchers that light the radar gun (90+ for right handers / 87-88 mph left handers) may get an opportunity to throw to the few hitters that they like.

Best of luck...If you have time to practice your 60 time.

HAVE FUN!!!!

These things are largely cattle calls. They'll have several hunderd people show up at these things. They might sign one or two people. But remember that people do get signed out of these tryout camps. Best of luck.

Yeah I'm a lefty pitcher. I would est myself to throw high 80's to low 90's.

Best of luck...If you have time to practice your 60 time. Do that. Depending on your positon, they're looking for sub 7.0 seconds. If you can fly, they might just sign you.

Make sure you've built up your arm strength and worked on your swing if you're a positon player.

This post is dead-on. These scouts are looking for tools. I think the 60 time is critical and what kind of gun (arm) you have. You better be able to bring it because, I assure you, they aren't looking for the Jamie Moyer type at these type of tryouts.

Another factor you going to have to consider at this stage of the season is the September call up's. So betting dogs might not be a bad idea here.

Pat,
If I may ask, How tall are you?

They're looking for 6'3" in a perfect world.

But if you're left handed and can come close to 90, then they'll at least give you a look.

If you don't know how hard you throw, get to the local HS or legion team and get someone with a gun to gun your pen. It's worth knowing before you go.

They are looking for arm strength but they're also looking for a quality second pitch: a slider with depth and a late sharpe break or a killer change piece.

Again, BOL...have a day, kid!

He is trying out for the team, not trying out betting on the minors.
