Do you bet your Hometown Team?
For the past month or so I swore off betting the Twins. It just seemed that anytime I thought they were a good play, they would lose. And as a fan I can't bet against them and cheer for them too lose when they have a chance to win the division. Well I bet them Monday at +110 with Blackburn vs Ponson. Result: NY 12 MIN 4. I just have to stay away.

In gambling, nothings better than benefitting financially on a teams success that you would want to win anyway. At least my look at it, makes the winning that much more enjoyable.

My team that I would never want to bet against (moneyline at least) would be the Celtics. I would rather not have action on the event if I had to back an opponent.

That honestly depends on who a persons home team is. However if you mean his directly, they have had a good season and steady road record and worth backing often.

What im reffering to is that you should be betting for and against your home team constantly. Why? Because you should have "inside info" about the team. Theres things produced in local news, newspapers, things you hear around town ect ect that not many people have access to. For instance while Espn is covering Giambis mustache, I am finding out that Jeter and Arod were out on the town late last night and might not be hitting so well that day or Mariano has the flu and will still play but not be 100%. This goes for your states proffessional and college teams.

Inside Info, living at that particular teams hometown is about a 90% edge, to me at least. There's a lot of sh!t just aren't reported except through the local news, and doesn't get on the paper about a day later or two.

I try not to bet on Tottenham, given that they're so inconsistent. If they win, it's double the enjoyment, if the don't, it's double the disappointment. The only time I bet a hometown team is in a finals

I dont know how many people follow Syracuse football but I made so much money when Donavan Mcnabb was playing QB(I had to have my cousin put in the bet)...If you do follow them...you would know right in the middle of the game he would puke in the huddle and sometimes right on the centers back. This was because he was out partying hard the night before and was very dehydrated the next day. You would always know to take the other team for as much as you could get on them if you heard he was out partying the night before. Those were the good ol days.

I just have that psychological thing going where I believe if I bet them they lose. I am something like 0-5 betting the Twins this year.

I feel like I have an edge with the Dodgers since I've been a fan since the 80s.... but that's not been the case. I have a losing record involving them.... but do have a 3 game win streak currently.

A couple points here. I think it is fair to say that if you are a fan of a team you have much more knowledge about that team than just the average fan. With that in mind, you are much closer to having "all available information" which should allow you to make a more informed decision than the casual gambler. I watch/listen to a ton of Brewer games so therefore I feel like I am in a better position to wager on their games and I've bet on about 60%-70% of their games one way or another.
Now, a lot of "fans" do not mind betting on their team, but they do not like betting against their team. This is where we draw the line between fans and gamblers. Gamblers don't see anything wrong with betting against one's own team and actually find it quite silly that if you are going to bet you won't bet against your own team. If you are scared to bet against your own team because it won't accomodate your viewing enjoyment, that's fine...but realize you are not a gambler in any sense of the term.
This is one of the big sacrifices you have to make. You will have to drop your loyalty and allegiance to your hometown teams/college. This was actually quite hard for me as growing up I was a big Detroit Tigers fan. I was resistant to betting against them. Eventually, you figure out the enjoyment of potential money outweighs that of any sort of fan loyalty.
Nowadays I look at fans and I wonder how I could have ever been so stupid and ignorant. When I talk with most fans, they sound so brainwashed with thier devotion and unconditional loyalty to multi-millionaire athletes.
I think it was put best in the movie A Bronx Tale when Lorenzo says to his son Calogero: "Does Mickey Mantle really give a **** about you?"

Ya, Twins definitely not the play last night. I had the bronx bombers in that one. They have been playing well but hard to bet them at New York with the Yanks starting to play well. But betting your favorite or home team is fine as long as you do it because they have the edge and not just because your heart tells you. I am a Florida State fan in football and last season the books gave them way to much credit so I bet the other side most of the time because they were laying -14 alot. It was easy money because even when they won they couldn't cover most of the time so in these situations it becomes an edge that you know as a fan and that can make you money so in these situations I would say it is okay but once again when you are talking about a team that is close to your heart you really have to watch when betting your team but I would say not to make it a habit because that just opens up the possibility for your bias to get in the way.

I only have one hometown team and will play them to win or lose, dependent on what my head says.
Play with your head, not your heart.

so true, local information is so useful.
i always wanted to know where to tv commentators and radio people find their stats... they seem to have a lot of stats? a lot more than i have access to.
alwasy listening to them, when my team is losing, and they pull out xxxxx team is 0-24 in day games vs this pitcher/team @ home
xxxx is batting .345 vs this pitcher w/RISP, xxx has how many sacrifice bunts etc..
these random stats are good to have.... can never find them?? any tips??
