Only way to learn is to watch. So subscribe to MLB.TV, it is like $14 a month and you can watch all the games you want. Watching teams gives you a good feel for them and their attitudes, etc. Some good tips:

-Check home/road records for teams. Some bad teams play well at home Pittsburgh, Cincy, Houston, Toronto, Mets, Baltimore, White Sox alll played better ball at home last year. Some good teams are garbage on the road Boston, Tampa, Minnesota, Detroit, and your Cubbies all had very strong records but did shit on the road. Some of these teams provide value in playing or fading based on where the game is being played.

-Check the starting pitchers. Pitchers are very crazy people. It is fun to bet on lights out guys like Lincecum and Halladay but sometimes the lines are just too big. You have to decide what odds you are willing to play the pitcher at and what odds you will take a pass on. The real value lies in finding pitchers like Sanchez of the Giants. Overall numbers were bad, home numbers were great, road numbers were awful. I made a good amount of many last year just betting the Giants when he pitched at home and fading when he pitched away.

-Don't do parlays and the run line isn't worth it.

-Your going to notice a pattern in baseball, your going to find yourself betting the same few teams a lot as well as the same few pitchers, that is ok, just keep looking for the edge and when you do keep pounding it until the lines are adjusted.

to be honest, if you start betting with the level of knowledge you're describing, i'd say you have just about no chance of making money long term. Baseball is impossible to predict when you don't know a lot about the game. I'd say you shouldn't bet unless you love something, and bet rarely, because until you really understand the aspects of the game, winning is simply luck of the draw.

So if you really want to bet on mlb often, I'd say put away your money for at least a year, and every night watch any team that isn't a joke like the Cubs. Watch baseball tonight, daily, as well. After one year of learning the game, then MAYBE you'd have a chance.

Just being honest. Go White Sox.

I'm sure you'll find many advices in this thead but you can be sure that this is the best one:

    # QUIT BETTING BASEBALL AFTER SEPTEMBER

Since rosters expand, baseball becomes a crazy (and unpredictable) game in September. Most profitable months are August & July in my opinion.

After 28-31 August, baseball ends for me..

Learn todays actions symbols and follow pimikes system plays. You should have fat pockets by seasons end..

If you know sabermetrics learn about expectation, really helps. You can find which teams are over/under achieving

Default Some other advices about baseball..

    1. Don't focus on Starting pitchers too much. They're overrated. Bullpen and Hitting are also important.

    2. ERA can be misleading. WHIP is a more reliable stat.

    3. Be careful when betting on short odds like 1,50 (-200). Starting pitcher may be an ace but don't forget that bullpen may ruin the game.

    4. Good home teams don't get swept at home easily. At least, not against poor road teams! Red Sox are a good home team but they can get swept at home by Red Sox or Angels..

    5. If you have a wager on Phillies, always hedge your bet (if you have matchbook or betfair) when Brad Lidge enters the game, LoL!

    6. Focus on dogs in April. Dogs are winning very often in April and September. Favourites are winning a lot in July and August.

    7. Baseball is a game of streaks/series. Royals can lose 23 in a row. Fade cold teams, ride hot teams/streaks!

    8. Chase Under when San Diego Padres are playing at home

Over the course of a season, the underdog generally wins 40-45 percent of all games, so the fact that a team is favored probably means less in baseball than any other sport you can find.

Starting pitchers are overvalued in the betting line, bullpens are undervalued.

Starting pitchers are where Vegas sets the line so the average bettor doesn't get on the right side.

That's the best advice. Everything changes come Sept.

If you have to, just stick to teams in contention.

I hit HUGE on the TWINS as -168 at home to beat the tigers in extra innings to get into the playoffs, just hours before I had to hop a plane to vegas. Remember it like it was yesterday. i can't wait for baseball!

of course, the twins lost three straight to the yankees. they had to play less than 24 hours later!! i sat at hiltons watching them tank... didn't bet. Their potatoe salad was pretty good.
