Ben Sheets
Heard on sports radio here that Oakland offered a contract to Ben Sheets. Could be a hit or miss signing for anybody, depending on if he can bounce back. I'd like to see the A's take a chance on him though. The AL West is going to be pretty solid this year.
Looking forward to baseball season.

The Giants have no use for Ben Shits. They already have 5 very good starters. They need hitting, not pitching.

The Giants are planning on starting a rookie (Bumgarner) and have been very lucky healthwise recently with their other starters, they could most definitely use some more depth in their starting rotation. See what Brad Penny did for them down the stretch last year.

I happen to like Ben Sheets
If Oakland could get Sheets for a couple million or less, I think it would be a great signing because he definitely has the ability to be a good starting pitcher. Right now, probably more of a 4th starter.

Yeah, I agree that the A's paid a lot of money for a guy that didn't pitch at all last year. I'm hoping it works out.
A's are going to be better than a lot of people think. Great defense, great speed, great pitching. They're not going to hit a lot of HR's, but they have some dependable bats in the lineup. Kurt Suzuki and Ryan Sweeney are vastly underrated, and I think Kouzmanoff could have a breakout year getting out of Petco Park.

It may look like kind of a ridiculous deal...but if he's throwing well and the trade deadline comes...they may be able to deal him for a solid prospect and a veteran or something...I mean, his services for half the year, plus a solid prospect...for $5 million?? (half year's salary) Not too shabby actually.
Completely right. Worst case scenario is that Sheets isn't healthy. 2nd worse is that Oakland pays $5m for a half season's worth of work, before shipping him off.
Mark my words though, Oakland will be in the AL West race for the whole season. Anaheim lost players. Seattle gained, but are overrated. Oakland is solid, and will surprise people.

Ohhhh I don't know Terrapin...I'm a Brewer fan, so I could really care less here...but I would'nt be sleeping on the Mariners this year. They have made whole sale changes to that roster. Jack Z. has done an INCREDIBLE job overhauling that roster to his liking in only 1 off-seasons time. Pretty impressive...all things considered, they probably have had the best off-season of any team in the MLB. "Overrated"...for a team that wasn't even in contention last season, to the changes they've made going into this season...I'd say overrated may be a little harsh.
I hear you bacardi. I actually really like the moves Seattle made. I just think too many people are already giving them the AL West crown. No question I'm a biased A's fan. Regardless, the AL West will be one of the best divisions in MLB this season.

Terrapin...Jack Z. has done well...for sure...give them the AL West crown?? Haha...I think anyone doing that is being a little ridiculous. The A's have a great rotation, and their a firey group capable of who knows what...and the Angels just can't be counted out when you're talking AL West. It should be a great race...I wouldn't be shocked to see any one of those teams win the AL West. Signing Duchscherer was huge...as a Brewer fan, he was rumored to be a possible guy we were looking at. I was pretty excited at that possibility...but it was clearly not to be. At any rate, Anderson is a promising star I think, from my perspective anyway...they should be a pretty good group...I wouldn't be thrilled to head to your park for a 3 or 4 game set in Inter-league play, that is for sure.
Jack Z. did a tremendous job, no question at all. Figgins and Lee are both studs. Plus, Bradley and Kotchman are also both good players.
Looking forward to the season starting...

It's just around the corner!!What, 3 weeks now??
Right around 3 weeks or so. I don't think I've ever been anticipating the baseball season, more than I have been this Winter. Funny because for the first time ever, I really became an NBA fan these past few months, but nothing will come close to how much I enjoy baseball.
Still some alright free agents on the market right now too. That'll tie us over until pitchers and catchers report. Actually, lot of signings today. I think the Garland to San Diego signing was great. Twins seem to have gotten a good deal on Thome too.

Oakland is going to ship him off like they did with Holliday last season... I will be surprised if Oakland is in contention for a playoff spot, and thus surprised if Sheets stays for no reason... Oakland can get some prospects out of this
I agree that prospects at the trade deadline could be the ultimate goal of this move, but man thats a lot of money to pay to hope to get some prospects later in the season.

It is smitch...but worst come to worst...they are still getting his services for a season (or half-season)...if he throws the ball well (under 4.00 ERA, which he's MORE than capable of), then it's not a bad deal even for $10 million...it's only a one year deal, and Sheets is known for giving it his all during contract years. Worst case scenario for him? He doesn't throw well, his career is over, but he's pocketing enough cash to set him up for life through this season if he manages his money well...all parties are happy!
However, being a Brewer fan...I know first hand what he's capable of during contract years, compared to non-contract years. During non-contract years, if he has a bruise on his calf he won't pitch...contract year, he'll pull a Jim Abbott if he has to in order to pitch every game. The way of the money I guess.

I think it's a great move if you look at the A's you see a team with a top 5 rotation top 5 defence and top 10 speed if you think about it they look a lot like a NL team. I am not saying the win the west but I think they will be fun to watch.
Man i hate this team. So crap.
sheets cant last a full season.
I think Oakland can actually be a bit of a surprise team with Sheets now, if he can stay healthy.
